Which vans are subject to the tachograph requirement
From 1 July 2026, the new rule applies to light commercial vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 2.5 t and up to 3.5 t when used for international carriage of goods by road for hire or reward or for cabotage.
Ordinary domestic transport within the Czech Republic and certain own-account transport are not covered by this new requirement. The specific use of the vehicle is decisive and exemptions may apply.
Typical cases where you need a tachograph
- a 2.5–3.5 t van carries goods for hire or reward between the Czech Republic and other EU countries,
- a carrier uses a van for cabotage in another Member State,
- the vehicle falls under international road haulage and no exemption applies.
Which tachograph is required?
Vehicles covered by the new requirement use a second-generation smart tachograph (Smart Tachograph 2). Before installation, the specific vehicle, technical configuration and required accessories must be checked.
