Mandatory tachograph for 2.5–3.5 t vans from July 2026
Practical guide: who the new requirement applies to, when it took effect, which tachograph is used and what to prepare before installation.
What changed on 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, selected light commercial vehicles over 2.5 t used for international carriage of goods or cabotage are also subject to driving-time and tachograph rules. The assessment uses the maximum permissible mass of the vehicle, including any trailer or semi-trailer.
It is therefore not an automatic requirement for every company van. The specific type of transport and any applicable exemptions are decisive.
Which tachograph is required
Affected light commercial vehicles use Smart Tachograph 2. Before installation, the specific vehicle, its electrical and mechanical preparation and the required accessories must be checked.
- vehicle make and model
- year of manufacture
- registration number
- ideally the VIN
- information about the current tachograph, if one is already installed
What to do before installation
Send the vehicle details through the online booking form. The service team will check the technical solution and clarify the scope of work, required parts and price in advance. If you are unsure whether the vehicle is subject to the new requirement, state in the note whether it operates domestically, internationally or in cabotage.
